CATEGORICAL AND ADVANCED POSITIONS

Do you evaluate applications differently based on interests in the categorical (PGY-1 start) and/or advanced tracks (PGY-2 start)?

Beyond basic eligiblity, track selection is not utilized in application review for interview offers. We want to empower applicants in the options that work best for them personally and professionally. It is fine with us if you apply for categorical only, advanced only, or both.

I am interested in BOTH the categorical and advanced tracks for your program. Do I need to schedule two different interviews?

No, you will have one interview. We do not have separate interviews for the tracks, as we submit the same rank lists for both tracks (with few exceptions). We are happy to have the applicants determine which track they are most interested in when they complete their rank lists on NRMP and interview day is the same, regardless. There is no need to decide which track you prefer before your interview. You can decide or change your mind later as you make your rank list, too.

When completing my application on ERAS, I only checked the Advanced Position, and wish now I had selected both. How do I correct this, or how do I tell you I am interested in both?

No problem, and you don’t even need to let us know! Go ahead and rank either or both tracks as you see fit. We rank the same to submit to NRMP for both tracks (with rare exceptions guided by eligibility), regardless of what is stated on the initial ERAS application.

How do I complete my rank list if I would like to be considered for both tracks?

If you are interested in both tracks, be sure you list both tracks for UW PM&R. List both the categorical position track and the advanced position track, in your order of preference, on your NRMP Rank List. Each year we have 3 spots in the categorical track and the reminder (5-8 depending on year and associated class size) in the advanced track.

APPLICATIONS & INTERVIEWS - SPECIFIC TO 2023-2024 APPLICATION YEAR

What is the interview format for the 2023-2024 application year?

In accordance with guidelines from Graduate Medical Education at the University of Washington, we will be holding all interviews virtually this application cycle. Our experience with this format over the last two years has been very positive. We continue to work on new and innovative ways to make the applicant's virtual experience as engaging as possible.

How many resident positions are offered for the 2023-2024 application cycle?

8 total: 3 categorical (PGY-1) positions and 5 advanced (PGY-2) positions.

OPEN POSITIONS

Does UW currently have any open position?

No, our program is currently full and is not accepting off-cycle residency applications.

TESTING / SCORES

Does UW have a USMLE/COMLEX score minimum requirement or cut-off?

No, we do not have minimum required test score. Each application is reviewed and scored for elements in both cognitive (e.g. basic science course performance) and non-cognitive domains (e.g. understanding and commitment to PM&R; leadership; service) during a holistic application review process.

Does UW require USMLE for applicants from Osteopathic Medical Colleges?

No, we do not require the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX.

VISITING STUDENT CLERKSHIPS

Does University of Washington offer PM&R rotations for visiting students?
